Journalism Bias Project
This revealing project was not one to take lightly. This project immediately started off with how the media has a role in democracy. Then to the amendments and president's men, going fast through the importance of not only free speech but also freedom of press. As we started building background knowledge, the presidential debates aired and stimulated modern and live conversations. One problem always comes up in journalism managing biases is a difficult task especially in a way of writing. Finally after a Socratic Seminar we moved on to the defining product we are now presenting. Though we did have a little bit of lessons to correct grammar, types of writing, and your way of speaking as well. We ended the project peer critiquing and giving each other feedback and proofreading our articles to tie all loose ends.
This project actually was a very eye opening process and truly showed me interesting things I didn't know before and made me think about a few different situations that I only had a focused view on. One such one was the Watergate in the 70’s when president Nixon was in a scheme to gain money from going into second term. The media was another example that changed since I never knew so much of it was shaped by big companies and how much power they could utilize or even could be utilizing. But what helped the most in the end that applied to my article itself was learning the balance between biases and how they effect a paper. So all in all the biases and everything else made me realize that speaking the truth is what we really want and maybe giving a chance to both sides of the story can improve it more.
Now through this we had to learn different types of writing in the sense of how we present it and of course grammar and punctuation. Grammar and punctuation we thought mostly everyone had a good understanding and solid knowledge of and how to catch mistakes. So that left to how we present our articles and even in the way we say a sentence as to make sure we are getting the point across. Most don’t think that it's there but biases are always there, even subconscious ones can show up just in a simple sentence. To finally kick off our articles we managed and found our biases and either exterminated them or guided them in a safe way to make out project and end result, something that we loved and we're proud of.
